Toyota made an investment in Steel Castings parts.add and will gain an investment of $25 million and add up to 60 new jobs.
Currently, the four-cylinders powering the RAV4 CUVs are sourced from Japan, while the crossovers themselves are assembled in Woodstock, Ontario. Presumably, the change in production location will not only take advantage of the Alabama plant's manufacturing capacity, but also work in favor of Toyota's balance sheet. Alabama stands to receive about 240 new employees and an investment sum of $147 million.
Toyota is banking on the continued success of its four-cylinder vehicles and boosting North American production of its long-four engines. The inline-fours in question are the 2.5-liter variations with variable valve timing, 179 horsepower, and 172 pound-feet of torque, which will be assembled at Toyota's Huntsville, Alabama, plant in the near future. The manufacturing facility currently produces 145,000 V-6 and 216,000 V-8 engines per year, and with the proposed annual rate of 216,000 inline-fours, the Alabama location's annual engine output will jump to 577,000 units. The four-cylinders will not only power the RAV4, but base-level Camrys as well. Production is expected to begin by summer 2011.
